What do you need to know about spray foam insulation?
When you start to look at options on insulating your new home or even adding insulation to your existing home, odds are you will come across spray foam insulation or most commonly spray polyurethane foam. As spray foam insulation contractors of San Antonio we feel it is necessary to inform our customers about this amazing product.
What’s the difference between foam insulation and other types?
First, as the name implies, this insulation is foam based, and it usually takes two components to create this foam, depending on your brand-preference. The mixture is made right there when the application is being made, this let’s the reaction create a maximum seal in your home.
It differs from others in not only price but efficiency, as the R-Value per inch is higher, making it slightly the more expensive option. Rest assure, the extra investment is well worth the money. This application is ideally made to your home as it’s being built, but there are retrofitting options. Depending on the a few factors, getting spray foam into your home, can pay for itself within a short period of time.
Attic
When adding this to your attic, depending on your current insulation, the old insulation will need to be removed. This will add to the cost of adding insulation to your attic, and most insulation contractors are equipped to remove and dispose of old insulation.
Walls
When retrofitting your wall insulation with spray foam, depending on the exterior of your home, a hole is drilled into the side of the home. This allows for the installer to insert a small nozzle and fill the cavity with spray foam. The foam expands to fill the crevices and gaps in your wall cavities. Whether the hole is made to siding, masonry, brick mortar, or any paneling, your contractor should then cover up the hole with the appropriate material.
Open Cell vs Close Cell Spray Foam
The difference between these two can be a bit overwhelming, but to keep things simple let’s break it down. Open Cell; expands, and allows it to get into areas that may be hard to reach. The R-Value is less than Closed Cell per inch. It does not provide the water resistance that closed cell does, but in San Antonio that is not a concern. Closed Cell; as the more dense of the two, it provides a higher R-Value, and works to strengthen structural integrity of the home, or building. It helps prevent moisture buildup due to it’s water resistance.
